On August 28, 2011, the post office in the town of Whippany, NJ (built in 1961), was destroyed by three feet of flood water during Hurricane Irene…it never reopened as a post office since then. The great news…in the fall of 2022, the building reopened, totally refurbished and reconditioned the damaged building and created the “Double Tap Brewing” company! What a pleasant and fun place it has become!
The building itself still has the original structure of the old post office and the interior has the feel, decor and interior design of a post office. There are many fun little tidbits of memorabilia that can be found all throughout the tasting room/bar area. These would include the original dedication plaque of the post office in 1961 (it lists John F. Kennedy as President!), some of the post office’s mailboxes, and a plaque stating all of the Postmasters of Whippany SINCE 1800! The bar itself consists of hundreds of postage stamps shellacked onto a great looking bar. There are plenty of games available…and even a dart board! (haven’t seen any of those yet in our travels ![]()

The tasting room is quite roomy and comfortable. There is a decent number of tables and chairs available along with a seating area that has relaxing couches. A wall-sized chalkboard adorns the back wall…listing all of the upcoming events, times, drinks, etc. The brewery is also family/child/pet friendly…a terrific place to bring your family and friends and hang out for a while! Time with friends…great beer…and a welcoming atmosphere…you can’t beat it!!

The bartenders and owners are simply fabulous and very enjoyable to speak with. Two of the co-founders of Double Tap, Todd Townsend and John Coyle were more than happy to tell us the story of Double Tap and show us the cool memorabilia. They not only made my wife and I feel right at home but many of the other customers felt the same.
On to the brews. There are 20 different kinds of drinks on tap to satisfy anyone’s palate. They featured Lagers, Fruit beers, IPA’s, Dry Irish Stout, Belgium beer, German beer, Wheat beers, Pilsners, and coming out just in time for Cinco DeMayo…a GREAT TASTING Mexican beer (we got a sneak taste
The German beer, the “Tightrope”, was very, very good! There are always new beers being created which gives people another reason to return and relish a nice brew!
We highly recommend that once you visit your local post office that you make your way to the tastiest and most enjoyable “post office” that you will ever frequent…the “Double Tap Brewing” company! They are like real postmen…they deliver the goods!!

Until we meet again…CHEERS!
