Twenty two years ago, the Cricket Hill Brewing Company CHBC) opened its doors in Fairfield, New Jersey, and since then, their beers have satisfied an untold number of happy beer drinkers. The brewery, co-owned by Rick Reed and Ed Gangi have created a spectacular assortment of all kinds of stouts, lagers, IPA’s, barrel aged tripel, sours, and several kinds of ales such as HOT ale, pumpkin ale, pub ale, pale ale, and Belgian ales. All of their beverages are made from choice, wheat, hops, barley and other ingredients. The first two drinks that they created…and are still popular to this day are the “East Coast Lager” and the “Hopnotic.” The next two of the original beers are the “American Spirit” and the “Colonial Blides” (the story behind this name is interesting…feel free to ask the bartenders how they chose that name!). The “Schnick Schnack” is a tasty sour whose name is derived from a Pennsylvania Dutch saying “Schnick Schnack” which means, “bells and whistles”…and that’s what this drink has…a lot of the good things that make this refreshment so good! Like I stated before, the Cricket Hill Brewing Company is known for their wide assortment of drinks! There is a huge array of drinks to choose from with sixteen beers on tap!
Located in an industrial area of Fairfield, the brewery has a nice outdoor patio where you can go to relax on a warm night. Upon entering the building and meeting the bartenders/owners, you will instantly feel right at home and welcome. We spent some time talking with Co-Owner, Ed Gangi and his wife, Gwen. They are authentically very pleasant, informative, and happy people. Besides the great drinks, they are the other reason why my wife and I enjoy visiting the brewery. The tasting room / bar room is a spacious, comfortable, laid back area that has a warehouse-type decor. There is an old bottling machine, adorned with lights that gives the room a cheerful ambiance. The brewery system/kettles are located in the back of the room and can be clearly seen. For all of you NFL Pittsburgh Steelers fans, owner Rick Reed has a Steeler banner and regalia hanging from the rafters. The bar is made of beautifully lacquered wood. There are several tables scattered throughout the room…some of them actual wooden barrels…very cool!
The Cricket Hill Brewing Company, the 5th oldest craft beer company in New Jersey, should be a destination to make sure you visit. You will love the freshness and good tastes of the beverages and the friendly environment. You won’t want to miss this treasure on your next New Jersey Brewery visit!
