How Did They Get Their Name?
Well over 130 years after the Civil War, the reversed military flag patch became a staple of U.S. military uniforms (in 2003). Today, it’s referred to as “assaulting forward,” a phrase intended to describe the soldier’s onward march into the fray of the battle. Thus, the goal of the brewery: to continuously move forward towards success and accomplishment.

What a pleasant surprise! The Backward Flag Brewing Company, located in a small industrial park within the beautiful town of Forked River, New Jersey, is a fantastic craft brewery that we KNOW you will enjoy. Owned and operated by two veteran military women, the brewery has a simple scheme with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere but most importantly, is dedicated to all military, first responders, and law enforcement as is evidenced by the plethora of memorabilia that is displayed throughout the entire tasting room. There is a wall covered with patches from hundreds of fire and police departments, military units, etc. If you visit them and leave a patch with them, you will receive a FREE PINT as a token of thanks for your dedication and service! There is also the “Wall of Honor/Heroes” which is a somber and beautiful area to visit, reflect and pay respect to those who sacrificed their life for our freedom, country, and way of life. Truly humbling….
Black Flag Brewery is a child, family, and pet friendly establishment which has many games available for family fun as well as a weekly “Thursday Night Event Night” which offers many kinds of shows such as “Open Mic Night”, etc. They also have a huge Veteran’s Day celebration every year which is an event that you don’t want to miss!
Our beertender, Jen, was so friendly and helpful as were the other servers. They happily provided us with GREAT tasting beers such as their flagship brews, the “Oak Armored”, American ale and the “Golden Outlaw”, Blonde ale…both were excellent! There are also stouts, IPA’s, seltzers, and other ales available. Though the menu is somewhat limited, we found all of the drinks to be delightful, wholesome, and flavorsome…we were not disappointed with any of them.
If you are a veteran, first responder, in law enforcement, or are just simply looking for exceptional beer, you will find a home here. A fantastic place with great beers…this place is a must!
