The next time you are in the northern New Jersey area, we have some great news for you…there is a brand new craft brewery in Bloomfield, the Varitage Brew Works! Varitage will be one of the cornerstones of the city’s revitalization program and it promises to be a location that people will enjoy for a long time. We instantly felt right at home and were welcomed not only by the two wonderful beertenders, Joey and Oliver, but also by the optimistic and good-natured co-owner, Mark Costa. The decor is hip, mindful, and well thought out…even the tiles behind the taps were creatively customized. The brewing kettles and tanks are located in the tasting room and add to the charm of the tasting room. Since soccer is beloved by the owners, there is plenty of soccer memorabilia located around the tasting room area…such as three soccer teams from three of the local schools and over 20 different kinds of soccer scarves located just over the beer taps and the beautifully crafted wooden bar. Pictures of the owner’s family members and friends are dispersed on the walls, displaying their heritage with the customers. The whole feel of the brewery is that of a European cafe..it really is wonderful. During warmer weather, the entire street in front of Varitage is blocked off, giving the customers a relaxed and enjoyable venue to enjoy a cold beer.
Regarding the brew’s that are created, Varitage’s main focus is on a variety of the traditional beers: ales and lagers. We found all of them to taste fresh, full, and delicious! There are no flights available but the beertenders are more than happy to give you a sample of a drink when you ask.
The motto of the Varitage Brew Works is “Born on the Bines of Tradition.” A “bine” is a European twining plant whose flowers are used mainly to flavor malts which in turn leads to great tasting beers. The future is bright and optimistic for the Varitage Brew Works and we are sure that a new tradition and their company’s heritage will be
continue for many, many years to come!
